About
MEChA has been presente at UNM since the late 1970s-early 1980s. However, the UNM chapter went into hiatus due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In 2021, my Introduction to Chicana and Chicano Studies class and I (as their instructor and adivsor) mobilized to resurrect the UNM chapter. Since 2021, UNM MEChA this recent incarnation has been dedicated towards bridging the University to the community (Freire, 1960). This has been in the form of protests, fundraising, and community workshops. One unique aspect about UNM MEChA is that we engage in transnational efforts such as collaborating with artists and activists from the global south to produce meaningful exchanges of knowledge and activist strategies. We also work with local activist organization such as the Brown Berets and La Raza Unida Party. One of our biggest events of the year is La Raza Youth Conference where we engage local high schools.
