About
TotoDiverso is a project founded by Jose Luis "Chaparro" Martínez Plascencia, Raul Ariiaz Cardona, and myself in the rural pueblo/town of Tototlan, Jalisco, Mexico in Los Altos De Jalisco. Historically, Cuir subjects have had to subvert to colonial-informed doctrines and social stigmas in covert ways. In 2023, Chaparro and Raul made the first movida to interrogate these dehumanizing social stigmas whilst resisting overtly by petitioning to organize the first marcha de orgullo (pride march) in the municipality's history. They did this by organizing the groundbreaking TotoDiverso Collective as medium to obtain funds within the institution with Chaparro and Raul serving as the inaugural committee members. Subsequently, the pair reached out to already established rural, LGBTQIA+ collectives across Los Altos de Jalisco and received support and solidarity from the neighboring communities of El Municipio de Poncitlan and El Municipio de Ocotlan. After rigorous clerical work (such as endless permit petitions), the marcha de orgullo was slated for June 10, 2023. Unfortunately, the government did not provide sufficient funds to the colectivo, so the marcha was in danger of being postponed yet again. By mere Joto-destiny, I happened to be in the area visiting family, and my cousin invited me to the marcha. I reached out to Jose Luis to see if I could help with decorating the floats, and he immediately asked me if I wanted to join the committee instead. I wholeheartedly agreed to collaborate! Together, we developed a transnational social media campaign to attempt to raise more funds. In just one week, we raised $800 USD thanks to the generous donations Jotería and ally communities across the world. I also helped with designing flyers and street chants for the march. They particularly loved this particular chant: "Toto, Diverso, ahora es el momento!" On June 10, 2023, we made history by reclaiming the streets of Tototlan, Jalisco, Mexico in the first marcha de orgullo with various Jotería from local and surrounding municipalities presente! A week later, we also stood in solidarity with Poncitlan at their local pride march. We plan on continuing this work by organizing future movements and marches in the upcoming years. Below, you can find media from past marchas and events. Toto, Diverso, ahora es el momento!
